I’m loving the look above! What about you? The Korean long dress makes one look taller and slimmer instantly! But wait, before you rush off and start clicking on the website and putting that pretty dress into your online shopping cart, do you think you can pull it off?

In order to imitate a certain look or make it work for you, it is important to ‘dissect’ the look and understand what makes it outstanding otherwise you may end up following trends blindly (even those that are not suitable for you)!

This is why for the same dress (same colour and cutting), one lady may fab while another may look fat! If you don’t understand the elements in a trend, it may end up working against you. Having said that, what do you think is important in making the Korean long dress look attractive?

1. Pick a long dress in a single colour
This gets a little scientific. When you wear a long dress (those that hits the ankle or somewhere near, MUST cover most part of the calf) in a single colour, the vision of the eye is not broken up and hence the silhouette looks longer. When you wear a colorblock dress or even rainbow-coloured dress, the illusion is broken up and hence the tall and slim effect is gone. Also, minimize on the ruffles and exaggerating details and you’ll look tall and slim in long dresses instantly – no pills or surgery required :P

p.s: Pick a black piece for the extra slimming effect but accessorize to make it less boring

2. Fabulous figure is a must-have (read: no tummy)
To carry the Korean long dress style, one needs to have a fabulous figure! NOTE: Fabulous figure does not mean you have to be slim, in this case it just means no tummy. Even among plus-sized ladies, there are those with great figure and defined waistline!

If you have a slight tummy, wear a belt or tummy shaper works great. In the unfortunate case whereby you love long dress and have a not-so-easy-to-conceal tummy, opt for one with an empire cut or elastic waistband.

3. Divert the attention, neckline or waistline – pick one!
Although at one look, the eyes will see a longer silhouette but to enhance it, you have to guide it somewhere. Typically it’s either neckline or waistline. If you have a slim waist and a perfect hourglass figure, play it to your advantage. Pick a piece that’s hugging at the waist, if it’s not, send it for alteration to ensure a good fit, you’ll be amazed at the difference.

If you have beautiful neck bone, pick a piece with U or V neckline or even off-shoulder style so you can show it off. If you have a pretty face, opt for shades, wear a scarf or even necklace to draw attention to the right place.

If all else fails, just try on as many long dress styles as you can to see which suits you! When shopping online for a long dress, do look out for the presence of return policy and see if they allow you unconditional return within a reasonable period (typically 7 days, 14 days or even 30 days). Unconditional return means you can return the dress as long as you’re not satisfied, no questions asked :)

2NE1 is a korean girl KPOP group. Pronounced ‘to anyone’ or ‘twenty one’, 2NE1 consists of 4 members: CL, Minzy, Dara, and Bom.

2NE1′s saucy and hip-hop music style influences their fashion style. As such it tends to be loud, colourful and a little wild at times. Think cropped top, loud prints, striking colours, colorblock (bright colours on bright colours) and high waisted pants!

A Colour A Day Skirt, ~US$22

When you think of 2NE1, you think of bursting with energy, vibrant, colourful. These skirts (available in 7 colours) is definitely 2NE1-ish! For the fashion bold or adventurous, pair it with loud and clashing colours. If you’re more reserved or go for the classy style with a tinge of colour, pair a bright colour (e.g. shocking pink, sunny yellow, vibrant orange) with a top, a long necklace, a pair of sandals and a cardigan to tone down the look but still look stylish and fashionable.

This skirt is also a must-have piece to pack along for those beach vacations and summer holidays (yes I know it’s the winter season, but if you’re heading to Southeast Asia, it’s summer all year round)!

Besides donning loud colours, doing a colourblock with clashing colours (e.g. lime green with magenta, cyan with bright orange, yellow with purple), you can also opt for prints and patterns! Have fun with this pair of booties sporting leopard spots! To tone this down and add a touch of femininity, pair this with ankle length socks that has lace or fur in white.

Double Layer Zip-up Vest, ~US$44

Another way to add sparkle to your outfit and make it Korean-ish is to opt for statement apparel with bold embellishment details. The bold and unusual collar of this vest plus the metal embellishments makes it a great piece for layering. Pair this with a simple tank, printed leggings or high waisted pants and a pair of matching open-toe style sandal heels for the casual chic weekend. Oh, not forgetting those shades for the Oh-so-Korean get up!

Shop the Look: Miss A Sexy Black

If you’re wondering what is ‘Miss-A-Sexy-Black’, it’s not a phrase! Miss A (미쓰에이) is a popular Korean KPOP Girl band consisting of 4 members: Fei, Jia, Min and Suzy. The group’s style is more towards sexy and loud although they also tend to appear in all black.

Military style is really for any time of the year. Winter now? Bag the military style in a long winter coat (left). Love that removable cute cape on the coat. Prefer a more androgynous look? Leather jacket is a common theme of korean fashion. They’re so easy to match. Simply throw it on over a basic tank and pair with printed leggings or boyish looking pants for the casual weekend.
